How do I translate a PDF?

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Choose the target language: the document's language is detected automatically.
  3. Press “Translate”, then download the translated PDF.

A letter in English, a contract in Spanish, a certificate to translate for official paperwork: the Translate tool replaces each paragraph with its translation, in the same place, keeping the document's images, tables and colours.

The translation is done by the translation models built into Google Chrome, which run on your computer. Chrome downloads each language once; your document, however, is never uploaded. The usual services upload the file to their servers.

Machine translation helps you understand a document, but it is not an official translation: for paperwork that requires a certified translation, contact a sworn translator.

Which languages are available?

28 languages, among those that Chrome can translate and whose script is reproduced faithfully in the PDF: French, English, Spanish, Arabic, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Romanian, Turkish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Greek, Hebrew and other European languages. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Thai are not available yet.

Which devices does Translate work on?

Google Chrome 138 or later, on a computer. Chrome's built-in translation does not work on phones. Chrome's documentation sets no other requirement for it than being on a computer.

Is my document uploaded to be translated?

No. The first time a language pair is used (for example English to French), Chrome downloads the corresponding language pack. The translation is then done on your computer: your document is sent neither to TwoDocument nor to an online translation service.

Is the layout kept?

Yes: the background of each page (images, tables, colours) is kept as it is, and each translated paragraph takes the place of the original. If the translation is longer, the text is slightly shrunk to fit in the same space.
