How do I compress a PDF?

  1. Choose your PDF.
  2. Choose the compression level: recommended, strong or light.
  3. Press “Compress”, then download the smaller file.

A PDF that is too large often blocks an e-mail, a job application or an upload to an official website. TwoDocument reduces its size by recompressing the images it contains, the most common cause of a large file, such as a scanned or photographed document.

The recommended level suits most documents. The strong level gives the smallest possible file, ideal when a site imposes a size limit. The light level keeps the original quality and selectable text, for a smaller saving.

Unlike most online services, your PDF is not uploaded anywhere: the compression is done by your browser. It is faster, and your personal documents (ID, payslip, contract) stay with you.

Does compression damage my document?

With the recommended level, the document stays perfectly readable both on screen and in print. The strong level reduces image sharpness further. The light level does not affect quality.

Does the text stay selectable?

Yes with the light and recommended levels: only the images are made lighter. As a last resort, the strong level can turn the pages into images to save a lot of space; TwoDocument then lets you know.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. Compression happens entirely on your device, in your browser. No copy of your document is sent or kept.

Why does my PDF barely get any smaller?

If it mainly contains text, it is often already very light. In that case, TwoDocument tells you and keeps the original file for you.
