How do I prepare my supporting documents for impots.gouv.fr?
- Choose your supporting documents as PDFs. Paper receipts? Scan them first with the Scan tool.
- Put them in order, for example by type of expense or by date.
- Press “Merge”, name the file (for example “Tax-documents-2025.pdf”) and keep it.
With the online tax return, most supporting documents are not sent: they are kept. For actual expenses, impots.gouv.fr states that you do not have to attach your invoices, but that you must keep them so you can produce them if the tax authorities ask for them. The same rule applies to donation receipts. Childcare costs for a child under 6 must be justifiable by any means: the childcare provider must give you a document that separates childcare costs from food costs. For a deducted maintenance payment, you must be able to prove, on request, the family relationship or the court decision, that the payments were actually made and, unless there is a court decision, that the recipient was in need.
Has the tax authority asked you for a document, or do you want to file a claim? Use the secure messaging service in your espace Finances publiques (your online tax account), on impots.gouv.fr or in the impots.gouv app. Click “Écrire” (Write), choose the reason, write your message, then add a document before confirming. In the app, the “Ajouter un document” (Add a document) button also lets you take a photo. You receive a confirmation e-mail, then another e-mail when your request has been dealt with. We found no official size limit or list of formats for this messaging service (checked on 27 September 2026).
Beware of fake messages. The DGFiP (the French tax authority) points out that it never asks for your bank card number, either to pay a tax or to give you a refund. If you receive a suspicious e-mail or text message: don't reply, don't click on any link, delete it. Only send your supporting documents from your account on impots.gouv.fr, never via a link you have received or an unknown site. With TwoDocument, the PDF is assembled in your browser: your receipts and tax notices don't pass through any server.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to attach my supporting documents to my online tax return?
Not for actual expenses and donations: impots.gouv.fr asks you not to attach them, but to keep them so you can produce them if the tax authorities request them. For actual expenses, state their nature and amount in the “Informations” (or “Détails”) section of the online return.
What file size does the secure messaging service accept?
We found no official limit published on impots.gouv.fr (checked on 27/09/2026). If adding a file fails, reduce it with the Compress tool, then try again.
Which supporting documents should I keep for maintenance payments?
According to impots.gouv.fr, you must be able to prove, if your tax office (centre des finances publiques) asks, the family relationship or the court decision, that the payments were actually made and, unless there is a court decision, that the recipient was in need.
Are my supporting documents uploaded online?
No. The merging is done in your browser. Only the tax authorities receive the file, when you upload it yourself to your account.
