How do I convert my Word CV to PDF?

  1. Choose your CV in .docx format.
  2. Check the preview: lines and pages break in the same places as in Word.
  3. Press “Create PDF”, then name the file, for example “Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf”.

A CV sent as a Word file can look different for the recruiter: a missing font, a line that overflows, a second page that appears. In PDF, the layout is fixed and the document opens identically everywhere.

TwoDocument uses open-source fonts with exactly the same metrics as Word's: Carlito for Calibri, Caladea for Cambria, Liberation Sans for Arial, Tinos for Times New Roman, Gelasio for Georgia, Cousine for Courier New. The text therefore wraps in the same places as in Word. A font embedded in your Word file is used as is. The text stays selectable: recruitment software can read it.

On a recruitment site, stick to the format and size requested. France Travail (the French public employment service) recommends a single-column CV, with no tables or skill-level bars, and simple headings: “Work experience”, “Education”, “Skills”. Does the site only accept one file? Combine your CV and cover letter with the Merge tool. Your CV and contact details never leave your device.

Will my CV have the same layout as in Word?

Yes for common Word fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Courier New): they are replaced by open-source fonts with identical metrics, so lines and pages break in the same places. A font embedded in the file is used as is. For a rarer font, the closest one is used: check the preview before downloading.

Will the recruiter be able to read the text of my CV?

Yes. The text is written into the PDF, not pasted as an image: it can be selected and copied. France Travail points out that recruitment software cannot read a CV that is an image or a scan. To check, try selecting a line in the resulting PDF.

PDF or Word: which format should I send?

Whichever the job advert asks for. According to France Travail, recruitment software reads .docx best, followed by a “text” PDF created from Word. Avoid images, scanned PDFs and .odt or .pages files. When sending by e-mail, a PDF guarantees the layout.

Is my CV uploaded online?
