How do I sign a contract or lease as a PDF?

  1. Choose the contract or lease as a PDF.
  2. Draw your signature with your finger or the mouse.
  3. Place it where required (and on every page if you are asked to initial it), then save.

A lease, a service contract, a quote to return signed: TwoDocument adds your drawn signature to the PDF, where required, with the words “Signed on” and the date. The “Place on every page” button places the same signature on each page, to initial a contract.

What it is worth: the European eIDAS regulation distinguishes four levels of electronic signature: simple, advanced, advanced with a qualified certificate, and qualified (ANSSI, the French cybersecurity agency). A signature drawn on a PDF is a simple signature. A judge cannot dismiss it solely because it is electronic, but its reliability is not presumed: in the event of a dispute, you will have to show who signed. Only a qualified signature is presumed reliable until proven otherwise (Article 1367 of the French Civil Code and decree no. 2017-1416).

In practice, for a lease or an important contract, agree on it with the other party. If they accept a simple signature, TwoDocument is enough. If they ask for an advanced or qualified signature, or if a law requires one, use a trust service provider. Your signature is drawn on your device: it is neither sent nor kept by TwoDocument.

Frequently asked questions

Does a signature drawn on a PDF have legal value?

Yes, it is a “simple” electronic signature within the meaning of the eIDAS regulation, and an electronic document can serve as evidence (Article 1366 of the French Civil Code). But its reliability is not presumed: if it is challenged, you will have to show who signed. Only a qualified signature benefits from a presumption of reliability.

When do you need an advanced or qualified signature?

When a law requires it (as is the case for some public contracts), when the other party asks for it, or when a dispute would have serious consequences. It goes through a provider that checks your identity. The ANSSI publishes the list of qualified providers.

How do I keep a record of the signature?

Date the signature, initial every page with “Place on every page”, send the signed PDF from your usual e-mail address and keep the exchanges. These help show who signed and when, without replacing an advanced signature.

Is my signature kept?

No. It is drawn and added to the PDF on your device, then forgotten. Neither the contract nor the signature is sent.
