How do I convert Word to PDF?

Is the text in the PDF selectable?

Yes. The text is written into the PDF, not pasted as an image: it stays sharp when you zoom in, can be copied and can be read by recruitment software.

Are .doc files accepted?

No, only the .docx format (Word 2007 and later). Open the old file in Word or LibreOffice and save it as .docx.

Is the layout identical?

Yes for the vast majority of documents. Word's fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Arial, Times New Roman, Courier New, Georgia…) are replaced by open-source fonts with exactly the same metrics: lines and pages break in the same places. A font embedded in the Word file is used as is. Accents, Arabic, Greek, Cyrillic, Chinese and emojis are kept.
