How do I prepare my supporting documents as PDFs?

  1. Choose your supporting document as a PDF. A photo? Convert it first with Photo to PDF or Scan.
  2. Keep the recommended level. Choose “Strong” if the limit is very low, for example 1 MB.
  3. Press “Compress”, check the new size, then upload the file to the administration's website.

Each administration sets its own rules. On caf.fr, the CAF (the French family benefits office) states that the “Mon Compte” area accepts JPEG, JPG, PDF, PNG and GIF files, up to 10 MB for the whole document. For online procedures with France Titres (ANTS, the French agency for ID documents and vehicle registration), such as the vehicle registration certificate (carte grise), the agency specifies that only JPEG, PNG and PDF formats are accepted, with 1 MB max per document. France Travail (the French public employment service) limits an attachment e-mailed to your adviser to 5 MB. For the secure messaging service on impots.gouv.fr (the French tax website), we found no official published limit. Information checked on 25 September 2026: always go by what the site shows when you upload.

A supporting document must remain readable, complete and properly framed: the CAF warns that an illegible document will not be processed. So reduce the size just enough: start with the recommended level, and switch to “Strong” only if you are still over the limit. The grouping rules differ: the CAF asks for only one type of document per upload (three payslips together, but not a payslip and a rent receipt); France Travail asks for one file per document (a two-page payslip makes a single file).

Tax notices, payslips, ID: these are your most sensitive documents. Here, compression happens in your browser. They pass through no server before reaching the administration.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum size for the CAF?

According to the CAF pages on caf.fr, 10 MB max for the whole document, in JPEG, JPG, PDF, PNG or GIF format (checked on 25/09/2026). A scan of a few pages usually fits after compression at the recommended level.

And for a vehicle registration certificate on the ANTS website?

In an answer published on Services Publics+ on 9 February 2026, France Titres (ANTS) states that each document must be in JPEG, PNG or PDF format and must not exceed 1 MB. Choose the “Strong” level. If the file is still too large, redo it with the Scan tool in black and white: the pages are much lighter.

My supporting document is a photo, what should I do?

Turn it into a PDF with Photo to PDF, or with the Scan tool, which whitens the background and removes shadows. The CAF and the ANTS also accept JPEG and PNG images, but a PDF groups several pages into a single file.

Are my supporting documents uploaded online?

No. Compression happens in your browser. Only the administration receives the file, when you upload it to its website yourself.
