How do I summarize a PDF?

The summary is written by the artificial intelligence model built into Google Chrome (Gemini Nano), which runs on your computer. The first time, Chrome downloads this model once and for all; after that, everything happens on your device, even offline. Other services send your document to an online AI.

Like any AI, the summary may miss a nuance or get something wrong: read it through before using it, especially for a legal, medical or financial document.

What setup do I need for Summarize?

Google Chrome 138 or later, on a computer: Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, Linux, or Chromebook Plus. You need at least 22 GB free on the disk that holds your Chrome profile, and either a graphics card with more than 4 GB of video memory, or 16 GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores. Chrome on Android and iPhone is not supported.

Which language is the summary written in?

In the language of the page. Since Chrome 149, Chrome's model reads and writes French, English and Spanish, as well as German and Japanese. In Arabic, the summary is written in English and then translated on your computer. If the tool does not offer your language, update Chrome.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only the first time: Chrome downloads its AI model (Gemini Nano), preferably over a connection without a data limit, such as Wi-Fi. After that, the summary is calculated on your computer, even offline, and according to Google no data is sent when the model is used. If free space drops below 10 GB, Chrome deletes the model; it can download it again later.

Is my document sent to an online AI?

No. The summary is calculated by the model installed in your browser. Your PDF is never sent, neither to TwoDocument nor to Google.

Can the summary contain mistakes?

Yes, like any artificial intelligence. It helps you understand a document; it does not replace it: read the important passages again.

My PDF is a scan, what can I do?

A scan contains only images. Run it through the OCR tool first to recognize its text, then summarize it.
